Tail Docking Explained

The majority of puppies I raise have  naturally bobbed tails. However, according to AKC’s Australian Shepherd breed standard, “the tail is straight, docked or naturally bobbed, not to exceed four inches in length.”

In order to follow the breed standard, my puppies that are born with tails have them banded  3 days after they are born. The puppies tails at this age are not yet developed: they are made up of soft cartilage and have minimal blood flow. The rubber band simply cuts off circulation to the tail, which causes it to go numb, shrivel and fall off within a few days.

This is VERY humane and painless for the puppies.

I am happy to leave the tails for families who wish, but puppies must be reserved by 3 days old to keep the tail.
